‘The Complexities of Empathy and Sympathy’
This exhibition explored the idea of empathy and sympathy for the viewer and subject. The three televisions are framed in mirrors allowing the viewer to be a part of the experience when encountering the work. The sound of the words ‘Empathy’ and ‘Sympathy’ being repeated in the background and the imagery at either end of the gallery space created an enveloping area within which viewers could relax and experience the morning sunrise and tide rolling in shown on the videos while also igniting conversation about the concept of ‘Empathy’ and ‘Sympathy’.

‘Empathy-Sympathy’
This exhibition worked with the space using projections, photographic prints mirrors, text and sound. It explored the emotions and words ‘Empathy’ and ‘Sympathy’. The viewer was given these words both visually and by sound. The projection showed a video of contemplation in a place of calm and tranquillity. The prints behind the mirrors repeated this motif of the ocean and reflected back both the viewer and the projections in the space. The work allowed the audience to consider how important empathy and sympathy are to them and how these can be experienced through our encounters with one another.
